Each of us has his or her own reason to join a gym (or excuse why not). As a woman of a “certain age,” mine was to improve my core strength as I have osteoporosis. My bone density was diminishing and I needed to get it stabilized. Since training, I’m pleased to say that my bone density has finally stabilized.
I’m now into my fourth year of training, the last 1.5 yrs. with Rowan. Since starting training with Rowan, the number of my weekly training sessions has doubled. Training at his private gym is much more appealing to me; you are the only one training and so have his full attention for an hour. It is easy to see the passion and enthusiasm that Rowan has for training by just listening to him and looking at the equipment he has in his gym – it’s much more than just a job with him! It’s more of a passion! He’s also always buying something new to help you along with your training that keeps you interested and is appreciated.
Since training with Rowan, and with his strong encouragement, I have accomplished some great personal milestones. To be honest, I’m quite proud of myself! For example (don’t laugh), I have never been able to do a full pushup in my entire life, and that’s quite a few years. With Rowan’s guidance and encouragement (and patience) to get stronger every week, I have been able to manage nine full pushups (with a break in between each).
I’ve also never been able to do a proper sit up. Once again, with Rowan’s determination to get me to do one, I am now able to do 15 in a row for a set of 3 – another milestone.
I’m now lifting weights that I never thought possible with my weak arms – never been able to count on them for anything. Now, it’s amazing how strong they have become. I’m always surprised at the weight I can lift and it just keeps getting better!
Rowan not only shows you exercises, he explains why a particular exercise is good and what muscles you use and why. He is also very careful to demonstrate the proper technique for each exercise so that you don’t hurt yourself. I’ve learned quite a bit about muscles and where they are located in the body and how to use them properly.
Nutrition is also very high on his list of topics to discuss – “no sense in spending money on training and not eating properly.” He has finally convinced me! I have seen the light and am eating healthier and feel great for doing so. Not only do I have more energy, I am a much happier person. Oh yeah, my husband also really appreciates the “new me” (even if I needed to buy a new wardrobe)!
Come Spring, I’m hoping that with all this muscle building, that silly little white ball will go twice as far as I was able to hit it last year. Golf season, here I come!
